In-betweenness
Crafted from luffas, a humble household material widely used in Mexico for its everyday utility, In-betweenness reflects on the narratives surrounding immigrant labor, often reduced to mere productivity, as well as the prejudices directed toward those perceived as outsiders, and the historical confinement of women in Mexico to the domestic sphere.
By removing the material from its functional context, its intricate, lace-like structure is revealed and elevated into something precious. Hand-sewn and dyed blue, the luffas evoke a sense of nostalgia and displacement. Their wing-like forms gesture toward the aspirations, desires, and suspended ideals carried through migration.
